Can I get auto insurance before I get my driver's license?
I need to get my vehicle insured, but I don't take my tests for my driver's license until next week. Can I still get auto insurance before this time?

Best Answer – Chosen by Voters Yes. You just have to list a primary operator – like your parents, who have a valid license. Source(s): agent, 21+ years

yes. if you have a permit already, you HAVE a DL#. in most states your permit number stays when you get a license. If you do not have a permit, you can place a driver (such as parent) on the policy as long as they have a valid license. In most states you actually have to PROVE you have insurance to get a DL. No. The first thing they ask when you go to get insurance is your license number. If you don't have one, you can't get insurance.

No insurance laws require a licensed driver

I work for an insurance company in Texas, and worked for several others before my current one. For us, and all other companies I have delt with, you must be possess a driver's license to obtain insurance. In that case, you'll be turned down before you get your license. As for getting insurance with a permit, most companies (including us) will require you to be covered under someone else's policy who is already licensed. We would just ask for your parent(s) to start your policy with you as an additional driver for the vehicle. That would be enough in Texas to the vehicle insured. If the vehicle is already insured undersomeone elses name, many companies will allow occassional drivers to be covered–even if that occassional driver isn't listed on the policy. But I have a feeling that the DMV will require your name to be on that policy–but can't confirm and varies per state.

Ask your insurance agent. I don't know, but it could easily vary according to which company you use.
