Best Answer – Chosen by Voters I don't think you mean underwriter. To become a licensed insurance agent you will need to take a few tests. One is for Property & Casualty and the other is Life & Health. You can get study materials through several different companies. I went through Dearborn. Source(s): http://www.findlocalinsurance.com

To be an AGENCY underwriter, you'll have to be licensed to sell insurance. It doesn't pay much, if you don't have any experience! But pay your fee, take the test & pass it, then send out your resume. You'll likely start out as a "csr" – customer service representative. They do the new business underwriting. Source(s): agent, 21+ years
