You could try to call the insurance agent. He/she isn't allowed to tell you much unless you are the beneficiary at your mom's death, but you can ask if it is your mom's ex and maybe get an idea from their tone. You could certainly find your mom's will or trust and see if shed said anything in it about the insurance. The attorney who wrote up the will would probably be able to tell you that. Good luck. (Call the insurance agent and ask him/her if they will check their files to see if your mom changed the beneficiary since the date of their seperation.) Good luck!

Divorce decrees do not overrule insurance beneficiary designations. The insurance company will pay only to the named beneficiary on your mom's policy. I hope she kept that designation up to date.

If your mother's ex-spouse is listed on the life insurance policy as the beneficiary of said policy, he will receive the money from the policy. If his name was not removed from the policy, your mother did not remove it. Only SHE can change the beneficiary on a life insurance policy covering her life.If he wanted a death certificate, chances are very strong that he is named somewhere on a policy as the beneficiary.
