Best Answer – Chosen by Voters Hay Big guy…..golf carts are fun, but expensive.Hay, about a Vespa or The recreation type 4 wheelers. If any motor vehicle is under 5 (Brake) horsepower, no one needs a license….to drive it on a street…got to have lights and brake's and most do.There are about 10 brands of 4 wheelers and 15 motor bike brands that are under 5 horse power, and have lights and brakes for the street…..and are under $500 new.Pep-Boys auto parts stock about 20 of these such vehicles in their auto parts store…these days. Even "Academy" has them on the floor new. In other countries…middle east or china these things cost under $200 new and are great fun. We use them just like you will….and they require NO license."Stay away from, "Pocket-Rocket's" they are getting a bad rap these days because they are so small and fast. Neighborhood type people complain. Cops cant do anything but the will hassle you.You would pay $2500 for a good used Golf cart if it has new batteries. You could buy maybe 6 'Mini-4 wheelers" for that price. The 4 wheelers, run on gas, and have lights and brakes for the street. And they will "scoot" in snow or up mountains……you know what i mean?Think about it………there is a lot of fun out there, also! They are light and you can put them in a pick-up….can't do that with a G-cart!The important thing is to get some wheels, under your but. All the above are made street legal…with signals and some have radios……there coool!Just some thoughts….(Houston)

I too do this in OHIO but our laws are a lot different than yours! Here it's illegal but since I put a slow moving red and orange triangle on the back and hooked up lites to it and then i use hand signals same as you would on a bike, so far I haven't been given any hassles!!!I would check with your local police dept. to make sure!

Depending on your juridstiction i would say that it would be illegal, you need to have your vehicle registered if driving it on public roads, the engine on the golf cart may not be big and that might mean you dont need it to be registered check with your road traffic authority Source(s): life

Look up your state and city's NEV (Neighborhood Electric Vehicle) or LEV (Lowpower Electric Vehicle) laws.In some jurisdictions, they are allowed on streets with 30mph speed limits and lower, if they meet certain safety requirements.sometimes you just have to add a rear view mirror, turn signals and parking brake to be legal,so check your local laws.
