Each hole has a par that your hitting for. For instance a Par 4 means it should take you 4 strokes to get it in the hole. Now, you could Eagle the hole that 2 strokes better than Par, a Double Eagle is 3 strokes better than par, a bogey is on stroke worse than Par, double bogey 2 strokes worse than par, triple bogey 3 strokes, and so on. A hole in one is the best score versus par 1 shot to get it in the hole. You definintly want to keep your ball out of the sand traps, and try to hit it in the fairway ( the lowest grass on the hole) because the ruff (where they usually don't mow the grass) is hard to hit out of.

Stroke is to hit the ball toward the hole.Par is the number of strokes the experts think it should take to get the ball in the hole.Par is also the term when you use the exact number of strokes.Birdie is when you sink the ball with one stroke less than par.Eagle is two strokes less.Bogey is one stroke more.Double Bogey is two strokes more.So on a 'par 4' hole:1 strokes = hole in one2 strokes = eagle3 strokes = birdie4 strokes = par5 strokes = bogey6 strokes = double bogeyTips? On a good drive (first stroke on the hole) you can get a 'hole in one' … try for those. They're good.

Each hole has a designed score that you should reach based on length and difficulty. Most holes, if they are 220 yds or less, are considered a Par 3 as you should be able to reach the green (flag area) in 1 shot, if hit well, which allows you 2 more shots to get a par.If a hole is 220+ to 450ish yards, it is generally a par 4. If it is over 450, it is almost always a par 5. Rarely, you will find a course that has a hole over 600 yards, sometimes these will be a par 6, but they are very rare.Let's take a Par 4 (the majority of holes at a golf course are Par 4's) for example. If you put the golfball in the cup in 4 shots, you get a par. If you make it in 3 shots, you get a birdie, or 1 under par. If you make it in 2, it is called an eagle. If you make it in 5, you get a bogey, or 1 over par. If you make it in 6, 7, 8, etc., it is called a double bogey (+2), triple bogey (+3), or quadruple bogey (+4). The object is to finish the round (9 or 18 holes) in as few strokes (or shots) as possible. However, the game of golf is more then just hitting a little white ball around a big grassy area. The rules of ettiquette are at play at all times as well as the honor system. You are expected to understand and follow the rules as you are the one responsible for keeping your own score. You can say you shot a par, but if you really shot a double bogey, you should record the score as a double bogey. Here is the web site for the rules of golf: http://www.pga.com/play/the-rules-of-gol…While playing with your friends who may not be serious golfers, you may adjust some of the rules as you see fit (unplayable lies, hitting from potentially hazardous positions, etc.) but the rules of etiquette should still be followed. Here is a good site for the rules on etiquette: http://golf.about.com/cs/beginnersguide/…Good luck. It is a quick game to learn, but impossible to master. No matter how well you played, there is always room for improvement and no matter how good of an athlete you are, it is a very humbling game.
