Best Answer – Chosen by Voters You don't necessarily have to own clubs and a lot of courses do rent clubs now, but a large majority of clubs do require that each player play out of their own respective bags meaning he & a buddy couldn't share the same set, as this really slows down the pace of play.

forget the guy above me (and the spammer).. Most courses require everyone to have their own set of clubs(meaning you can't share) Renting clubs does not make you look like a loser as many times you will be playing with clubs that are out of your price range. Not all courses have clubs for rent though, just gotta check it out, also the price varies a lot.

Well, forgive me for asking, but has he actually played golf before? I know it might seem strange to ask, but has he?if not: Golf is a very fun, but challenging game to master. The basics of golf are easy enough to pick up but several rounds on the links and several hours at the range are needed if you are to enjoy yourself and not piss the people off behind you. Proper etiquette must be followed at all times. If he hasn't played before, I recommend you buy him an inexpensive set of pre-owned golf clubs and take him to the range. Make sure he actually enjoys it before you send him on a quest through 18 holes of pain. I remember my first round of golf, I shot a 120 and it took 4 and a half hours. Several groups had to pass me and I lost $60 in balls. I also hit a windshield ($250) and sprained my ankle (the point of golf cleats.) Make sure you know what you are getting yourself into. You may very well ruin a very special day for him. if he has: As stated by other posters, most clubs rent golf clubs. If you have a military friend, most military owned golf courses rent clubs out for free, only government issued id is required. Also, the local cc in my area rents out ping g5 irons. Those are better irons than most people who own their clubs have. Just call the local course and ask if they do, what the price is and what brand they rent. It will save alot of hardship in the near future. I hope I covered my bases. Tell your husband happy b-day for me and good luck searching.cheers

Call the course and see if they have rental sets available and what the cost is (typically…US$25-100 depending on the facility).Resort courses that cater to out-of-town play tend to carry multiple sets (given that it's a bit of a pain to travel with your clubs!).

Call up the course and ask them if they have rental sets. A lot of courses in my area don't have rental sets but the nicer the course and the higher the price, the more likely they are to have a rental set or sets. Source(s): 7 yrs Pro Shop Employee

It depends what kind of course you go to the average golf course will allow you to borrow demo clubs but if you go to a up-scale course you will be required to have your own.Have Fun Golfing! Source(s): Golfing Experience

You don't have to own a set, but make sure the course you send him to has rental clubs or it will be a very bad experience for him

Call the pro shop at the golf course. Most places have rentals for around $50-$100 for the day.

some places allow you to rent, but renting clubs kind of makes you look like a loser
