Best Answer – Chosen by Voters It's about you as an individual. If you know how a certain golf ball performs, you theoretically could play whatever. You don't really lose anything, distance-wise, between "cheap" balls and "tour" balls. Greenside spin is where everything gets different. The "tour" balls spin more on a lower angle than a "cheap" ball. If you want stopping power, a "tour" ball is your choice.Like I said, though, your buddy probably doesn't know how or doesn't care if he spins the ball on the green. That's his right. But it's your right to play the ball you feel the most comfortable with, as well. With a little work, you could probably drop a few more strokes, especially around the green, by playing those "tour" balls.

Well I guess you are both right not knowing what your game is or hncp.Balls are very important and come in a variety of differences. You should know what your driver speed is. They make balls designed to be low spin off the tees and yet produce a high spin with a wedge. If your swing is a bit erratic then playing a Pro V1 may be extenuating your errors. I am a single digit hncp player and yet find it very hard to pay $5.00 for a golf ball…however hitting your Walmart Specials maybe be no good either. Talk to your pro, tell him about your game, budget, etc….he will give you several options and many different costs….When I was a kid I used to love to play Top Flite XLII Plus….They were about $1.00 a ball and flew great….Everyone used to haze me about 'em until they looked at the score card and what there Titiliest were giving them…..Also to play X-outs ! These are very good balls that have been rejected because of a finish flaw..you will do 10X that damage on your first hit ! They are typ. about 1/2 price.

I've tried a bunch of balls. Didn't see a lot of difference in a lot of them. I did try the new top flight d2 straight. Sometimes i put a lot of side spin on the ball but this ball has a different kind of shell that helps it and its been playing very well for me. So brand wise i don't really believe it, but softness an hardness an type's of covers, yes. Source(s): experience

The ball totally affects your game. The brand doesn't necessarily effect the ball it's the ball material. I am a lady so I play a ball that is lighter and built for slower swing speeds. I never worry about the brand I look at what the ball is built for.

its pretty simple, if you are good enough to recognize the difference and see how it is benefiting you (more spin, ect.) than you are not wasting your money…but if you think that both the balls are extremely similar then you probably are.

Your buddy is right, unless you are close to a "scratch" golfer theball does not matter.
