Have you ever been injured by a golf ball?
We live on a golf course. I am worried about injury to myself or my kids from stray golf balls. My husband thinks the risk is minimal. However, I disagree and am looking for proof/examples because I want to make radical changes to our house/yard to make it safe for our kids to play outside. Any comments/experiences would be appreciated.

Nope never been hit. However, I've hit 3 people – all golfers. Do you play golf? Your house may be a target but I wouldn't worry too much about it. Here's some guidelines.Don't let the kids play on the course.The left side of the hole gets fewer shots than the right side.A private course would be better than a public course.If you live really close to the tee box you should be fine.The length of the hole, width of the fairway, type of players,and where your house is all determine how likely your house will get hit. If your house is on the right side of the hole out about 150-250 yards for the tee box then you are in a high target zone. The rest of the areas I wouldn't worry too much about. Most golfers don't yell "fore" when the ball is leaving the course unless they see someone in the area.I'm not sure how much a redesign will help. If you are really afraid of golf balls you might consider moving. I have a friend who lives on the other side of the street to houses that are backed up to a course and he gets balls in his drive way frequently.Hope this helps.

i got hit by a golf club on my shins… bled for a few days…doesn't look like it will ever heal and i have a huge indentation.

Remember, when purchasing a home on a golf course you have no legal recourse against the golfers for damage to your property or injury to your family or guests. The supreme court rejected the notion of yelling fore as a requisite as tests showed the warning did not lessen the chance of injury. If you don't golf ask a friend who golfs to assess your home from the tee box or landing area in regards to your danger. If you are in harms way build a screen or plant trees to protect yourself. Beware, some homeowner association rules prohibit or limit fences, screens or trees. I carry a copy of the law that absolves the golfer from unintentional damage liability in my golf bag. Even if the golf course posts signs stating a golfer IS responsible, in court the golfer wins unless the homeowner can prove that the damage was intentional.

While the degree of risk is minimal the possibility of injury still exists. I've been hit twice by a golf ball and the odd part about it is that both times it was my own golf ball. The first time the ball ricocheted off a rock and hit me in the temple and knocked me out. The second time the ball bounced back off a fence post and hit me in the chest. That didn't do any damage. So the element of being injured by a golf ball exists. It makes no difference who hit it or where it came from. I've played courses that have fairways lined with homes and very few take any precautionary measures concerning errant golf shots. The only measure I've seen taken is the placement of large mesh net strung between two trees. Other than that, nothing.This is why homes along a fairway the are 180 yards to 250 yards away from the teeing area are cheaper than other homes on the golf course.

I've only almost been hit when my own shot bounced off a tree. I agree that the chances are minimal but it would be an excellent idea to plant trees or put up a higher fence. Plants would probably be your best bet.

i know someone who was hit in the eye with a golf ball and has been partially blinded from it ever since. but there is a small chance of it happening from a distance.

why will they sell houses next to it if there is any chance to be hit? It should be a safe distance.

depends on where your house is located if you're house is in an area where if someone slices the ball, it could land in your yard/house, then you better get a fence/net

I was hit once by a golf ball but was not hurt, it hit me on a bounce. I was also on the course on the time. A person would really have to be hit on the fly to be hurt, and that just doesn't happen often. It's hard enough to hit a stationary target, let alone a moving one (a person, etc., ). A stray rolling ball poses more threat to your lawnmower than your family. The chances do go up or down depending on where you are in relation to the green, or the teebox of the hole you are located on. The closer you are to a teebox the better. Good luck.
