Gary Player was the first player to truly focus on golf fitness. In today's golf world, fitness is the next logical step to a better game(or step to a better game). Is it important? If you want to be on the leading edge of the new trend in golf, I believe it is important. I would take a look at TPI(Titleist Peformance Institute). It is expensive to go through the classes but if you can find a TPI certified instructor they can come up with a workout program for you. The program checks your flexibility and balance and rates you on a handicap system. Scratch to 30+ and everything in between. I have started the program and am quite happy with it so far. A lot! But it's not the most important to winning nor playing.

Yeah, but you usually have to carry your own gear and there are some hilly courses.

Physical fitness is important …… period. Not just for golf, but for your health. Take a walk when you can, exercise, wheather it be walking, jogging, running or riding a bike or whatever is good for the mind and body.Get out there and get active. Don't grow old before you're old like I had to. Source(s): Me, I"ve been going downhill ever since I had to quit riding a bike due to bad health. Two bum knees now insread of one, gone from farsightedness to nearsightedness.

For professional golf, there's only one way you will ever understand…………get out to some golf course some summer when the temperature and humidity are in the 90's……you can even ride in a cart, if you want……….play 18………then toss and turn in bed, because your livelihood depends on how you do…get up at 6AM….hit the practice tee…….back on the course…….DO THIS 4 DAYS IN A ROW!!!!…….and never forget!!….your paycheck depends on your performance……..then come back here and tell us what you think!!! Now, if you're just a weekend golfer, no you don't need extra strength.

you should be in decent shape, but you need to have a good short game if you want to be a scratch golfer

I think its very important.. im not saying that you have to be a fit person to play good golf but it is much easier to hold together your round when your are in good shape and not huffing and puffing after 12 holesalso your swing will be more tuned and you will have greater club head speed if you are flexible and strong

Happy Birthday to Steve
….Physical fitness is important just as long as you are doing the right exercises for golf. Cardio fitness would be more of advantage then having muscle mass popping out of every vein. More offen then not you will see golfers walking, sometimes up to 36 holes a day, so as long as your heart rate allows you to walk comfortably you will be ok to play some decent golf.Take a look at some of the golfers out there on the tours. Phil Mickelson, wouldnt exactly say he's in the top 50 of physical fitness… but sht he can play.

Physical fitness is important in every sport.years ago it was not unusual to see an overweight golfer on the tour, however when the physical fitness craze hit, and the in shape guys began to win the tournaments, most of the golfers tried to get into shape just to compete.

You know, fitness is important, but lets face it, it's golf we're talking about. I used to be a handicap 12 when I was 180 lb (I am 5'8") and that was 13 years ago. Now I am 42, I weight 203 and my handicap is 9; my lowest was 4 and at that time I was 230.Having said that, I think my golf would have been even better if I am in better shape. However, golf is not like bicycling where fitness is PARAMOUNT. Fitness will make you play better but other factors will count more, such as flexibility, patience, mental toughness, and smooth-as-silk swing. Good luck. Source(s): been playing golf since 7 years old, my birthday today, 42.

Try playing a course that's close to seven thousand yards and the average temperature is 96*. You have to have stamina. Source(s): IMHO

When you can walk 36 holes in a day and come back and do it tomorrow, then you are ready for scratch golf. If you can't walk up and down the big hills, how are you gonna hit your ball if your not ready to walk for it.
