You could learn the basics in little to no time. Being an "expert" requires at least 10,000 hours of work (not just golf, but any physical endeavor), according to a Dr. Christina, in an article for Golf Magazine.

Unfortunately, getting "decent" at golf takes awhile. Of course being athletic and having "natural ability" will speed up the process, as will lessons with an instructor who is good at teaching new players. To be ready to play with other players on the golf course, be sure to take several lessons (3-6) and also at least one playing lesson, so you can learn the stuff that really matters to other people – etiquette, speed of play and the basic rules. Also, keep a look out for golf classes for beginners, as they may be less expensive. Source(s): http://www.universitypark-fl.com/club/sc…http://www.myvacationpackingchecklist.co…

You can learn the basics of how to hold a club, swing it and strike a golf ball within a few hours. Becoming proficient at the game can take years and years. Most (myself included) never "master" the game but we still get out there a couple of times every week with great expectations and hopes that we'll become highly skilled at the game.

Best answer is to go to your local Golf Course and talk to your PGA Pro about some group lessons, generally 6 one hour lessons, and learn the basics. Take 3 or 4 series of group lessons then go private with your Pro. THIS IS IMPORTANT: Have your Golf Pro fit you for the proper set of clubs. DO NOT GO BUY A SET AT BIG 5. THEY ARE CRAP.and so are the set you just bought at the garage sale up the street, they are 20-30 years obselete. The first question I ask all new students is DO YOU HAVE ALOT OF PATIENCE? If they say no I tell them Golfs not for you. You get out of Golf what you put into it. See Golf Clubs are more user friendly today. Meaning easier to hit the ball because the aweet spot on the golf Club is much larger than when I took it up 37 years ago. Technology in Shafts helps get the ball up in the air, dimple configuration helps the ball travel further and straighter. Some balls are designed to go higher in the air but not quite as far as balls on a lower tragectory. My suggestion is get a job at a Golf Course for starters. Hell you can even go to College and get a degree in Golf Management. The possibilities are endless. The best way to learn on the course is to play with friends who are better than you. Golf is a game that you play for fun. Second your really not playing against someone else, your really playing golf against mother nature. You are your own worst enemy at times. Ther eis no one to blame but yourself, and trust me here your scores will be worse before they get better Im an expert here. I have worked with all types of students over the years. I have taught Hollywood Celebrities, regular folks like you, I even brought Golf to the Special Olympics here in California back in 1995.I have had Special Olympians playing bogey golf on Executive Courses who have been playing 2 years. I have even had a 45 y.o. student who ran his own company, was a total alcoholic who stopped drinking cold turkey because it interfered with the practice program I put him on. Guess what he got his first hole in one in just 5 weeks from the time I put a club in his hand. By the end of his first year he was shooting 85 on regulation course. By end of second year he was in the 70's. Need more info to give you an idea. I need your age, sex, other sports you play well, especially individual not team sports, any medical conditions (Ortho, Cardiac, respitory, etc)IHow much time can you devote daily to practice between lessons, and playing time. If you work an 8 hour day then you can only work during the nightime. Ive been playing since 1972. Im 48 y.o. In college I hit 1,000 balls a day for 2 years. I have hit roughly 5,000,000 golf balls practicing on range. given over 15,000 golf lessons, have students who travel to see me from Denmark 2-3 times a year.Your relationship with your Pro is critical. Dont be afraid to get a second opinion. I must be doing something right if I have a returning student who travels over half way around the World to see me for 2-4 weeks at a time 2-3 times a year. Good Luck and if you have any questions feel free to contact me. Im here in Southern California in beautiful Rancho Mirage. 10 miles east of Palm Springs Source(s): College of the Deserts Golf Institute, PGA of America, and 15,000 lessons I have personally given.

To trishaH you certainly don't look like a golfer.. anyways.. it takes a while to become good at anything
10,000 hrs of practice is the magic number for anything (:

Tiger Woods is still learning. For as long as you play golf, you will be learning. That's one of the best things about it.
