Best Answer – Chosen by Voters I don't know about the 1920s.Byron Nelson's career from 1932-1946 included 63 PGA Tour wins. He said in an interview in Golf Digest that his career winnings totaled $182,000. I read that article last year, and I remembered that he talked about money and the Great Depression.Addendum: I found another interview of Byron Nelson at Golf.com:<quote>[Golf Magazine] Tell me more about the money you couldn't make in your heyday.[Byron Nelson] I won the 1936 Metropolitan Open, my first important tournament, with $5 in my pocket. From '36 to '42 I won 19 times including four majors, and my entire winnings were $25,495. That's about $4,000 a year. So I made my expenses. My career winnings were $182,000. In 1939, Cliff Roberts, who ran The Masters, told me, "Byron, you're going to have to care for your money because you'll never make enough playing golf."</quote>Addendum #2: I found the prize money for the Open Championship at Wikipedia. First prize in 1920 was £75, and it increased to £100 by 1929. The earliest recorded PGA earnings is for 1934. Paul Runyan won $6767 with 7 wins. Pro golfers is the early 1900's were looked upon a hustlers, not well organized and not taken seriously as athletes. C'mon, they played golf in a suit and tie. Source(s): Long time pro.

They didn't make much. They made more by 'barnstorming'.Guys like Harry Vardon and Walter Hagan would spend a few days in town playing the local club and giving demonstrations and lessons. The prize money was minimal.I always chuckle at the people who think it is worth remarking that Bobby Jones was an amateur. His father's law firm made more in a week than the top golfers made in a year. It was nothing for Jones to turn down the few hundred bucks he could have collected. Jones had a private caddy and traveled the world playing golf with no financial concerns at all.
