How to take my golf game to the next level?
How to take my golf game to the next level?
I've recently broke 80 ( i shot 75) on a easy, short course. only 6200 yeards, par 71. But when playing in longer courses, my score goes way up. Especially with those long par 4's. If I have to take a 3 wood out to reach the green, i will most likely miss it. I hit my 3 wood from 200 to 220 yards. carry maybe 180.
I am pretty confident with my short/mid iron games, but not comfortable at all with long irons and fairway woods. what must i do to take my game to the next level?

Best Answer – Chosen by Voters stay off of the long courses until you get more comfortable with your game and confident of your ability. just try to be consist ant with swing. usually when trying to swing too hard results in either slice or pull. just have fun and game will come.

This will sound strange but when I got better chipping and putting my long game improved. What happened was if I missed the green and could get up and down for par then there wasn't the pressure to hit the longer irons perfect. If you watched Phil and Tiger today you saw this in action with Phil up and down all day. He wasn't that stressed when he missed the green and hit it better off the tee as a result. Growing up my dad aways said the third shot was the most important. You could miss the first two shots and it didn't matter too much if the third shot would get close. One of the problems many young (and older) players make is to think they should hit every shot perfect. Watch the pros they hit bad shots too. They just try to make the next one count. To take your game to the next level. Tournament play is where the pressure is.

The best way is obviously a lot of hours at the driving range, however, you need to make sure you don't practice bad technique, there might be a flaw in your swing that allows you to get away with hitting the short and mid irons however once you get to the long irons and woods the flaw is magnetized. Take it from someone who started playing golf 5 years ago and who is now a 2 handicap…they best way to get better is study the game…you need to know all the little intricacies and practice practice practice. Good luck.

the key is to play a consistent game. by using clubs the you are comfortable with and puting yourself into situations that work for you make it easier to make par that it is to scramble to save bogey. if you don't like hitting long irons and woods, but have a good short game, use a lower iron and put yourself around the green and turn the hole into a pitch-and-putt. that's about the best advice there is: play to your strengths and avoid your weaknesses.

Lots of good answers!I will add two things.Try a hybrid and get rid of 3 and 4 irons. They are much easier to hit form 180+.Get a strong 3 wood, 13 degrees or less, and a nice 5 wood. I sounds like you have a nice swing, and everyone has trouble on long par 4s. I just played Northstar GC, #18 is 480 into the wind. I killed a drive and had 230 into the green, I had to lay up with a 3 wood to 50 yards. I hit my 3rd to 10 feet. I made bogie but I had a good chance at par, it could have been a lot worse, think positive.

I agree with Ted. I think the easiest way to consistently break 80 on those tougher courses is to improve your short game.Ask any pro what part of Tiger's game they want, and most of them will say his short game. It's amazing how all of the pros from can stick it from 50 yards and in, and put it within 10 feet of the cup. And even more crazy is how they drain 10 foot putts like they are 3 footers! If you can improve on your pitching, chipping, and putting, you won't feel the need to pull out your 3-wood on those long par 4s. Even if you're looking at a 190 yard approach, you can hit a 5-iron to just short of the green, and go up-and-down for par. You probably won't be scoring a lot on these long par 4s, but at least you'll stay out of trouble and not be forced to make an even tougher shot from the thick rough or from under the trees.

Work To Drive The Ball Further, While Doing That Pick Up A Couple Of Hybrids Perhaps A Loft Similar To A 3, 5, or 7 Wood. You'll Like The Control And The Way They Land The Ball On The Greens So Mid-Iron Like. Good Luck.

It sounds like you already golf far better than the average joe, but I would recommend a few golf lessons. A good golf course pro should be able to help you with the long irons and fairway woods. You are never to good benefit from the advice of an expert.

You Sound like you score well congratulations scoring is very difficult part of the game. Power is very elusive and important here is the key get controlled power within your body size. If can swing 85% and hit your three wood 200 yards than that's you and it's what you got. The are only 2 alternative's 1 increase your swing quality because power leaks mean huge yardage loss. The last thing you can do is hit the gym get stronger i did it I'm 5-9 155 i hit it 290+ But average 280 I hit it far enough. So improve your swing get stronger and more flexible.Final note check your clubs maybe and i say maybe they aren't right for you good luck.
