The " higher class people " were the supporters of early golf in the states and were responsible for many of the first courses and their growth. It is still an expensive sport which now covers a greater segment of the population and more attuned to the middle class and those with disposable income. The proliferation of public courses has brought many lower income players into the game. Our initiation to golf came through the caddy ranks. So I speak for many septuagenarians and octogenarians who are playing today due to them being caddies in their youth. Source(s): There are still several " snobbish " members in " snobbish clubs" who look down on degradation of their membership who kept the places from folding.

In the 1920s golf was for sure a rich, high class sport. Even today when a lot of middle class people play golf their are still a lot of private country clubs where the rich high class play golf. I think golf will always be a sport for the higher class even though it is a lot more affordable for middle class to play.
