Best Answer – Chosen by Voters I agree. First get a swing. Go to http://www.pga.com/instruction/ and read it and read it. And then try it. They have all the basics and fundamentals there. That's how I started. And you know what? Over the years I had some minor lessons and minor changes done by pros. And I can play golf today and enjoy every second of it. But you need to want to do it. Some people ask me how do I hit every shot exactly the same. Even on a simulator the top view of my swing paths are the same. And the connection on the club face. Then I always say. Try hitting about 50000 to 60000 balls and then ask me that again. Well bottom line is that its something you need to groove and work very hard at. Golf is a very difficult game but very very rewarding mentally once you have the ability to play it a bit. And no one will ever beat it. That makes it so fantastic. We all in the same boat with Tiger Woods and need to work on it all the time.

don't waist time with lessons until you've messed around with it a little. grap a used set on ebay or at a garage sale and search for how to grip the club and the basics of swinging on line. then when you can repeatedly hit the ball the same way at the range get lessons. that way you have something for the pro to work on. right now you would swing different every swing and the lessons would be a waist. another great tip is work on putting and chipping first then learn to hit the ball. it will benifit you more when you get further into playing.

The best way would probably be to take lessons from your nearest PGA professional. This way you would start off with the right basic skills and won't develop bad habits from the start.

It would probably be best to get your own set of relatively cheap clubs first before starting. Then find a local golf pro at a course or driving range in your city that can give you lessons.
