Get yourself a 15-pack of Top Flite XL2000's or Pinnacles. When it comes to new balls for a beginner, that's the best bang for you buck.

Go to Dick's Sporting Goods and buy what's on special. They almost always have Nike, Slazenger, Maxfi or some other 2-piece balls out for a cheap price. They had 2 dozen Nike balls for $20.00 a couple weeks ago.

It depends. If there are woods next to the course, there are plenty of new used balls. Therefore the cost is free. Take them to a place you can practice and get your balls back, and see which ones are decent. New balls are for the advanced level. At Soul Park in Ojai, California (a PGA course) we could get a 5 gallon bucket full of decent balls in an hour in the nearby forest. Out of that, how many do you really need, 12 or 24?
