Will putting a sports exhaust on my golf make much difference?
I'm thinking of putting a scorpion or jam speed exhaust on my 2.3 v5 mk4 golf, will this improve the cars performance and what about a KN air filter will that make much difference?

A higher flow exhaust and a K&N will generally gain you a few horsepower, but be careful. The computers in many newer cars are designed to run only with the factory parts, so if you start adding high performance equipment (K&Ns don't usually cause trouble, but an exhaust that flows exhaust much more freely, for example) can make the computer think that something has failed and this usually redices performance. A high performance chip will usually fix this, but make sure the chip is compatible with the mods you're doing. Also, if you want to make more serious poower, look into things like a hotter camshaft (again, consider the computer), larger fuel injectors, a turbo or supercharger, or porting and polishing the head for better flow into and out of the cylinders. There is a lot you can do with a computer controlled car, but you need to be careful that everything will work with the computer and each other. Also, if you can only afford one or two things right now, you may want to look for a computer chip that is rated too work with both stock and modified engines. That way you have some improvement right away, and it will make it much easier to make more changes in the future. I hope this helps! I have a Neuspeed p-flo intake on my 2L New Beelte, and just added a Remus axleback exhaust (made in Austria). The intake gave it a nice growly sound, but only about half as much HP as the exhaust I just put on. With the exhaust, the power difference is noticeable, but nothing spectatular. I mostly got it to get a nice subtle exhaust note. I also had the resonator replaced with a custom-bent pipe.

Switching from stock to performance parts for those items may get you another 10 to 15 horsepower on average. A car's engine is really just a big air pump. If you can make the flow into the pump and out of the pump work better then what power is generated will be used to spin the crankshaft instead of pushing exhaust.

If you put a full system on will be better than just a back box. And a filter. Is there any point of spending 3-400 quid just for the sake of 10-15hp?

It will sound hotter. So will give you the impression you are more powerful/faster/ and that is all you need, right?
